Review: Lesbian Sex – 101 Lovemaking Positions

I’ve reviewed a book on positions before and while it did contain a few same-sex pairings it was mostly hetro-couples.  Even though I am mostly heterosexual, I was very intrigued when Good Vibrations offered Lesbian Sex:  101 Lovemaking Positions to review.

The Run Down:

  • Toy Type:  Adult Instructional Book
  • Author:  Jude Schell
  • Publisher:  Celestial Arts
  • Pages:  224
  • Size:  5″ x 6.75″ x 0.75″

  • Pros:  Small size and classy seeming; Nice pictures; Checklist; Index of type of positions; Nice to see pictures of real people in the positions (seem more achieveable)
  • Cons:   Not the most discreet book; Cheesy names and descriptions; No variation in body type
  • Overall Rating:  4/5
  • Recommended: Yes

The cover

The cover of the Lesbian Sex is fairly erotic.  It has two nude women embracing, though there is no nudity.  It is not a book I would want to leave setting out on a desk if I were expecting company.  It also says “LESBIAN SEX” along the spine, so don’t keep it on your bookshelf if you need to stay discreet.  It is a rather small book, so it would hid behind books quite easily or go into a dresser drawer.  It’s also a hardback book, which I like.  It makes it seem very classy.  There is a short description of the book and a quick blurb about the author.

The checklist

Inside the book there is a Contents page, that lists all of the positions, an Introduction, all of the positions, Checklist, and an Index.  Yes there are 101.  The intro talks a bit about what the book is about, but it’s not very long.  The checklist shows smaller versions of the images correlated to each position and has a small check box for each.  The index is nice because it lists the positions by the type of position:  Anal Play, Clitoral Focus, Deep Inside, Friction, Oral Pleasures, and Toys Included.

An example position (this picture made me laugh)

Each position takes up two pages and there is a large picture, title, and a short description.  The positions feature all women and are erotic in nature though there are no direct shots of the genitals.  I find the pictures of real people in the positions makes them seem like they are easier to accomplish than the stick figures or artistic renderings in other books.  The names and descriptions are a bit cheesy, but that seems to be a trend in position books.  The descriptions do tell you a bit about the position and what it would be good for.   The wording is such that it’s clear who is which position, typically by designating a ‘top’ and a ‘bottom’.  Some of the positions do show the use of a strap-on and the occasional toy.  If you which to find a position based on the type of stimulation or toy use, you can do so with the index.

There appear to be four women in the various images through-out the book.  They are all of similar (small) size and all white.  I don’t find their bodies to be particularly relate-able as they all have small ‘media perfect’ bodies.  I’m sure there was some airbrushing, but for the most part they do seem to be natural bodied.

Overall, while I think the names and descriptions of the positions are cheesy, I think Lesbian Sex is a nice little book.  It’s fairly inexpensive and it has a lot of pictures with great images.  It is a bit limited its body type variation but the images are tasteful and erotic.  I think it could probably be used for heterosexual, gender queer, and transgender couples as well, just instead of grinding, there would be actual penetration.  Most of the positions involve the use of manual and oral techniques, so I don’t think that limits it to strictly female-female couples.  Male-male couples may find some use for it, but possibly not as much as couples that have at least one vagina.
