Review: Pjur Superhero Lubricant

I don’t think I’ve reviewed any lube in a while so today I’m going to review the Pjur Superhero “EnergizingGinkgo” lubricant sent to me by FunWares.  I mean with a name like “Superhero” I just had to try it.

The Run Down:

The bottle

I really like the look of the canister the Superhero lube comes in.  It comes in a 5.5″ tall bottle that is 1.25″ in diameter.  It has a simple color scheme of black, yellow, and silver/gray and it has the silhouette of a man in “superman”-ish pose.  It doesn’t really scream sex lubricant at me, though I still keep it tucked away.  The back of the bottle lists the ingredients as well as a short blurb about the lubricant in 10 differnt languages.  You don’t often see a lube that comes with multiple languages on it, so that’s nice.  It also has phone numbers and a website for the Pjur group.

The lid of the bottle screws off to reveal what I consider a salad dressing style opening.  It has a little plastic cover over the opening that has a small hole in it.  I am not a fan of this type of bottle.  I much prefer a pump.  I find this style very awkward to use.  The lube itself is very runny which makes it even more difficult to use.  Just tilting the bottle enough and it will start to drip out with out any squeezing.  I haven’t made a mess with this *yet* but I feel like it’s only a matter of time, especially if you leave it open to reapply later and then end up knocking it over.

The awful lid/opening

The lube itself is waterbased but it does have a bit of a silicone/oil feel to it.  It is super runny, much runnier than I prefer.  I’ve dripped it all over me while trying to apply it to a toy.  It is very slick on just skin, but I found it to not be as slick depending on the material.  I’ve found it works best on glass and metal toys that don’t naturally have a lot of drag.  However, on silicone toys it’s just not thick enough to add much extra slipperiness too it, especially if it’s a ‘frosted’ and not slick silicone.  It lasts an okay amount of time, especially when used vaginally, but when I just rub it on bare skin it rubs in and leaves me feeling a little greasy and gets just slightly tacky.  Not as sticky as some water-based lubes though, it’s mostly a greasy feel.  When rubbed onto the back of my hand it left a sheen.  It will wash off easily with soap and water but it is a lube that I like to wash off.  I think the best use of this would be for handjobs, since even with the greasy feel it’s still slick on the skin.  It may also be decent for light anal, even though it is not very thick.  I think the greasy/oil like feel will work better there.  I couldn’t detect any smell with it and it has a sweet taste with a bit of a bitter aftertaste.  It’s not a horrible lube to taste, but I would rather have something with no taste or flavor in it.

The ingredients also knock the lube down a lot.  It has four (yes four) differnt parabens and the first ingredient is glycerin.  If you have senstivies to either of those I’d suggest staying away from the product.  I also thought it was odd that it has two forms of alcohol in it, Benzyl Alcohol and Phenoxyethanol.  Both are used as a preservatives but Benzyl Alcohol is also used as a topical analgesic, a numbing agent, and to decrease viscosity.  I didn’t notice any numbing effect, but some people may notice it.  The bottle also doesn’t mention anything about it numbing, just that it contains Ginkgo.  Ginkgo on the other hand has been though to increase blood flow so it may cause a stimulating effect when used.  I didn’t notice any stimulating effects when I used it.  It also has coloration in it yet there is no color to the lube, so that’s a bit confusing.

Overall, for the price, I think you can find a much better water-based lube than the Pjur Superhero lubricant.  I was really hoping it would be awesome, but I hate feeling greasy and like I need to wash off after using lube.  Plus the ingredients will not work at all for many women and the Benzyl Alcohol bothers me a bit.  I did not have any reactions to this lube nor could I feel any stimulating effects or found it worked for my “best performance”.  Plus, the bottle is just poorly designed in my opinion for a lube that is this runny.  I don’t recommend getting this unless you want to try it for anal or hand jobs.  I would be careful for anal though because of the possible numbing agent.  Otherwise, I would suggest going with something natural and body friendly like Sliquid Organics Natural Gel.
